A People Displaced

SCROLL DOWN

A People Displaced

The war in Syria has externally displaced more than 4 million individuals, precipitating an influx of over 500,000 refugees across the European continent. Refugee children ages 18 or younger—who constitute 51% of all refugees—regularly encounter structural barriers that limit long-term educational attainment.

When compounded with the host of other challenges facing forcibly displaced populations—including social ostracism and unstable housing—such educational hindrances ultimately result in diminished levels of socio-economic mobility. In Europe and across the world, a generation of Syrian children lack access to social, educational, and economic opportunity on a systemic scale.

OXY•REI seeks to assist government and civil society efforts to address these urgent challenges.

Short-term (spring and early summer of 2016)

  • Undertake comprehensive research into the holistic educational needs of refugee youth in Europe.
  • Examine government, NGO, and local community responses to these needs, with a current focus on case studies in Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands.
  • Identify shortcomings and consider ways in which responses can be improved.

Long-term (summer of 2016 and beyond)

  • Maintain an ongoing overview of efforts to address the educational needs of refugees in order to facilitate the exchange of information and best practices among government and NGO partners.
  • Provide guidance and support to local actors involved in the development of effective educational programs.
  • Serve as an innovation hub for entrepreneurial projects that can supplement educational needs.
